Hilversum: Unveiling the Hidden Charms of North Holland's Serene Village
Exploring the Charms of Alkmaar and Enkhuizen in North Holland
North Holland may be most well-known for being home to Amsterdam, but there are other delightful destinations within the province worth exploring. In this episode of the series "Yovi's Homeland," the hosts, Yovi and Dan, decided to visit Alkmaar and Enkhuizen instead of the bustling capital city. These charming towns captured their hearts and left a lasting impression.
Alkmaar: A Cheese Lover's Paradise
Alkmaar is a city that exudes small-town charm while still being a major city. One of its most famous attractions is the cheese market, which is the biggest and oldest in the region. Every week from April to September, locals and visitors gather at the square to witness the bustling cheese market. People dress traditionally, and you can catch a glimpse of how cheese was traded in the past. The city itself is adorned with reminders of its cheese-making heritage, such as the shape of the city lights, which resemble the wheels of cheese carried by castrachers during the markets.
Alkmaar also boasts cozy streets in the city center, giving it an intimate and welcoming atmosphere. The city is home to the Cannonball House, a symbol of the city's history during the 80 Years' War. Its gable showcases a Spanish cannonball dating back to 1573, serving as a reminder of the city's resilience. Another notable figure from Alkmaar is Truus Wijsmuller-Meijer, also known as "Auntie Truus." She was a Dutch resistance fighter who saved the lives of more than ten thousand Jewish children during the Second World War. A statue in her honor stands as a powerful reminder of her courageous acts.

Enkhuizen: A Quaint Town and Outdoor Museum
Enkhuizen is a charming town located on the shores of the IJsselmeer, one of the largest Dutch lakes. It is renowned for its marina, making it a perfect destination for water activities and sailing enthusiasts. The town is also home to the Zuiderzee Outdoor Museum, known as "Zuiderzeemuseum." This interactive museum showcases how things were done in the Netherlands throughout history. Visitors can explore traditional houses, interact with costumed characters, and experience life from different eras.
Nearby, families with young children can enjoy a visit to Sprookjeswonderland, a theme park inspired by well-known fairy tales. This park offers gentle rides and interactive features, creating a magical experience for the little ones.
Exploring Amstelveen: Discover the Charms of North Holland's Delightful MunicipalityA Night in a Former Prison and Culinary Delights
During their stay in Alkmaar, Yovi and Dan spent the night at the Fallon Hotel, which was once a prison. The hotel maintains a four-star luxury experience while giving guests a glimpse into the building's historical past. With a cozy and comfortable room, they enjoyed one of the most comfortable beds they've ever experienced in the Netherlands.
For a celebratory dinner, Yovi and Dan visited Soup, a charming place that doubles as a restaurant, bed and breakfast, and vintage shop. This was their first time trying a vegan restaurant, and they were pleasantly surprised by the delicious Greek lemon and thyme soup as well as the other vegan dishes.
Another culinary delight in the region was the Frans Mann restaurant, where Yovi and Dan experienced an authentic cheese fondue dinner. The restaurant is family-owned and operated, and they were fortunate to be there on the launch day of Alkmaar's cookbook. This cookbook features popular recipes contributed by various local restaurants, with all the proceeds going towards supporting the restaurants during the challenging period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Conclusion: Discovering the Charms of North Holland
Although Yovi and Dan had to pause their exploration of Dutch provinces due to the pandemic, their trip to Alkmaar and Enkhuizen left a lasting impression. These towns showcased the rich history, cultural heritage, and warm hospitality of North Holland. From the bustling cheese markets to the interactive museums and delightful culinary experiences, there is so much to explore and enjoy in this region of the Netherlands.
Although uncertain when their journey will resume, Yovi and Dan are grateful for the support and look forward to continuing their adventure through the Dutch provinces in the future.
