Exploring the History and Entrepreneurship of Hardenberg

Welcome to another episode of our slow journey from Kampen to Moscow. In this episode, we explore the city of Hardenberg, known for its rich history of entrepreneurship and international connections. Situated on the Vecht River, this city has been a bustling center of trade and commerce for centuries.

A Bridge of Prosperity

The bridge over the Vecht River in Hardenberg has been a lucrative source of income for the city throughout its history. In the past, anyone traveling by land to Groningen and Leeuwarden had to pay a toll to cross this bridge. Additionally, boats traveling between Germany and the Netherlands were required to pay a toll to pass under the bridge. This strategic location made Hardenberg a popular overnight stop for travelers between the two countries.

The Influence of the Hessian Wagons

In the 17th century, many Hessian wagons passed through Hardenberg. These wagons, filled with goods, were not allowed on regular roads due to the restrictions imposed by landowners. As a result, a route called the Hessenweg was established along the northern bank of the Vecht River, passing through Hardenberg. This route became pivotal for the transportation of goods between Germany and the Netherlands.

The Impact of the Steam Tram

In the late 19th century, a steam tram was introduced in Hardenberg, connecting the city with the nearby peat village of Dedemsvaart. The terminus of the tram was located in Heemse, just outside Hardenberg. This former station coffee house still stands today as a reminder of that time. The steam tram played a crucial role in facilitating transportation and trade in the area.

Hardenberg and the Hannekemaaiers

Throughout the years, thousands of German agricultural workers, known as Hannekemaaiers, passed through Hardenberg on their way to seasonal work. These workers primarily came to mow lawns and were often organized into groups. They would travel long distances, sometimes walking up to 50 kilometers a day, to reach their destinations. The peak years saw between 20,000 and 30,000 Hannekemaaiers passing through Hardenberg in a single month. Accommodating these workers became a challenge, with some finding shelter in inns or farmhouses.

The Journey to the Netherlands

While Hardenberg was a key entry point for Hannekemaaiers, there were a few other transitions for German workers entering the Netherlands. One such transition was located in Boertange, a small village on the border between the two countries. Another important entry point was Nieuwe Schans, which received many workers from East Friesland. However, about 80% of Hannekemaaiers opted to pass through Hardenberg due to its excellent connections to other parts of the Netherlands.

Stories of the Hannekemaaiers

The Hannekemaaiers were often nicknamed "Poepe" in the Netherlands, derived from the German word "boebe" meaning comrade or friend. These workers were usually young men who left home to work in Holland, attracted by higher wages. They were typically well-trained in farming practices and played a crucial role in the agricultural labor force. The legacy of the Hannekemaaiers is still present today, with field names and pathways serving as reminders of their contributions.

Entrepreneurship in Hardenberg

Early Jewish Settlers

In the late 18th century, a small number of German Jews settled in Hardenberg. They established businesses such as butcher shops and textile trading. Initially, their acceptance into the local society was challenging, but over time they became integrated members of the community. Tragically, their presence was abruptly halted during the Second World War, and today, stumbling stones serve as a reminder of their existence and the horrors they faced.

The City Farms of Hardenberg

Hardenberg also had its fair share of city farms, which were characterized by small stables located behind homes or shops. These stables were originally used to keep cows, which were then taken to pasture each day by a city cowherd. As the number of travelers passing through Hardenberg increased, the profitability of maintaining cows decreased. Consequently, these stables were repurposed as storage spaces for goods, and the large doors became valuable assets for loading and unloading.

Industrial Development and Challenges

Hardenberg saw the establishment of various factories and businesses throughout its history. Some notable examples include the Salland butter factory, which operated from 1889 until the 1980s, and the First Leeuwarder Textile Company, also known as Eltem, which specialized in manufacturing Manchester trousers. However, with the introduction of new transportation and economic challenges in the 20th century, Hardenberg began to lose its position as a major transit city.

Hardenberg's Revitalization

To combat unemployment and stimulate economic growth, the Dutch government designated Hardenberg as a development center in the post-World War II era. This decision attracted several companies to establish themselves in the city, including Diamant concrete, Walramit steel company, and Wavin, the largest PVC pipe factory in Europe. The establishment of these companies played a crucial role in positioning Hardenberg as an industrial hub within the region.

The Continuity of Brunink

A notable family business in Hardenberg is Brunink, which started as a forge in 1915 and has grown into a company with approximately 70 employees. Brunink specializes in manufacturing machines and parts for power stations and other industries. The company holds the prestigious title of purveyor to the court, highlighting its reputation for excellence and dedication to quality.
