Discovering Nunspeet: A Delightful Escape in Gelderland's Charming Countryside

A Two-Day Hiking Adventure in Huddersfield

In December of 2019, our adventurous traveler embarked on a two-day hike in Huddersfield, starting from the town of Harrogate. The plan was to hike from Huddersfield to the town of Nunspate, with an overnight stay in between.

Day 1: Exploring the Woods and Military Training Grounds

After arriving at the train station in Harrogate, our traveler made their way through the town to the edge of the woods, located near Fumbled Fog Hotel. The weather was perfect, with a warm sun shining and a gorgeous deep blue sky.

The path through the woods led them to the Hudker Woods, where the landscape and vegetation constantly changed. Despite it being winter, the plant life in this area was still flourishing. The next terrain was the Bakehouse or Zondbakehouse Horizonte, a military training ground consisting mostly of sandy dunes.

Our traveler marveled at the beauty of this unique landscape, with the crisp blue sky contrasting with the yellow sand. They followed the tracks of military vehicles until they reached more familiar woodland, where water was plentiful. As the sun began to set, they searched for a suitable campsite for the night.

After finding the perfect spot, our adventurer set up their camp, ensuring they followed Leave No Trace principles. With a fire lit and dinner cooking, they enjoyed the peacefulness of nature and settled in for a good night's sleep.

Day 2: The Final Stretch and a Tranquil Morning

After a chilly night, our traveler awoke to a calm and clear morning. Surrounded by peaceful silence, they quickly prepared a cup of coffee and enjoyed a hearty breakfast of oatmeal and nuts.

They then packed up their camp, making sure to leave the site as they found it, and began their hike once again. The morning light shining through the trees, broken by the morning mist, created a magical atmosphere. As they trekked onward, the landscape transformed from dunes to woodland, showcasing the diversity of the area.

Arriving in Nunspate

As the hike came to a close, our traveler reached the bridge across the 828 highway, marking the boundary of the nature area they had been exploring. After crossing the bridge, a short walk through a small park led them to Nunspate.

On their way to the train station, they passed the Visitor Center with an impressive watchtower, unfortunately closed that day. A few minutes later, they found themselves on a train platform, reflecting on their adventure and eagerly anticipating the next one.

Although this particular journey had come to an end, there are undoubtedly many more adventures to come for our intrepid explorer.
